Our Diablo 4 preview playtime left us with high hopes…

In our hands-on preview of Diablo 4, penned by our very own Tyler Colp, there was an abundance of optimism following his experience with a demo build of the game set for release in late 2022. Tyler was particularly impressed by the immediate and captivating options for customizing characters. “Diablo 4 has reminded me why I can’t seem to find the same satisfaction in other action-RPGs. It’s either a tedious process to acquire enough abilities to strategize effectively, or they bombard you with so many options that it becomes overwhelming,” Tyler expressed. “Blizzard has struck the perfect balance in terms of the pace at which your spellbook fills up and the introduction of new challenges that keep you on your toes.”

…and our beta impressions tempered them

The beta weekends of Diablo 4 in March 2023 and its subsequent “server slam” in May effortlessly attracted a multitude of enthusiastic demon-slayers. However, not everyone departed from the Fractured Peaks filled with excitement. Certain members of the PC Gamer team were left with a distinct impression that Blizzard’s expertise in ARPG design has become stagnant in Diablo 4, or even regressed. The server slam in May, along with imbalanced beta class distribution, lengthy ability cooldowns, gradual combat resource generation, and limited playstyle options raised significant concerns about the long-term enjoyment of Diablo 4’s classes. Considering the proximity to the game’s release, it is highly likely that what we experienced in the beta is what we can expect, with only minor adjustments.

Diablo 4 is emphasizing class choice and identity

In the month of November 2022, Joe Shely, the game director of Diablo 4, joined forces with Rod Fergusson, the general manager of Diablo, in an exclusive interview with IGN. The purpose of their discussion revolved around the intricate design process behind Diablo 4’s captivating class gameplay. With an aim to foster individuality, they shared intriguing insights on their vision of allowing even two players belonging to the same class or sub-class to possess distinctiveness.

We embarked on our journey with a handful of classes, overflowing with enchanting notions for unique class mechanics tailored to each one. The allure of these mechanics extended far beyond their impact on gameplay; imagine being a barbarian, aligned with a sorceress who skillfully wields her class abilities. Witnessing the sorceress in action would undoubtedly ignite a curiosity within you, prompting thoughts of exploration and discovery. Our utmost desire was for each class to radiate its brilliance in distinctive and captivating ways.

In addition to various other features, it has been officially confirmed that players will have the ability to meticulously modify their skill tree, with each point being adjustable. However, this customization process will come at a price, which will progressively increase as players advance further in the game, ensuring that their decisions hold significant value. Initially, the cost was initially deemed so exorbitant that it was advised to create a new character instead. Nevertheless, the recent Twitter statement from Diablo’s general manager, Rod Fergusson, has revised this notion.

Diablo 4 is making big changes to items

Blizzard asserts that their vision for itemisation revolves around enhancing the uniqueness of each class, fostering extensive customization options, and immersing players in a realm of intricacy that lies amidst Diablo 2 and 3. In a development update, former game director Luis Barriga expressed, “Our goal is to offer a multitude of unexplored treasures and infinite avenues for class development.”

Notable alterations encompass the incorporation of weapon velocity and various intrinsic physical attributes present among all types of items. Each shield, to exemplify, will possess a blocking attribute in addition to its unique set of properties.

Blizzard aims to enhance item qualities and affixes, seeking to provide players with greater freedom and discouraging the disregard of non-legendary items. Barriga shared, “We’re amplifying the potency of individual affixes found on Magic items.” In the endgame, the maximum number of affixes on Rare and superior items will be increased. Remarkably, Legendary affixes will now be randomly generated on Legendary Items. Additionally, Unique items will take the place of Mythics.

    Say goodbye to inventory Tetris

Input: Yeah, you got it! Say goodbye to the hassle of rearranging different items within your restricted storage area in an attempt to squeeze in a little more loot. Blizzard claims they are determined to prevent any disruptions in gameplay caused by tedious inventory management. Makes sense.

In Diablo 4, each piece of lootable gear occupies an equal amount of space, eliminating the need for meticulous ring optimization to maximize your treasure stash. While occasional trips back to town are still necessary to empty your loot bag, the days of maneuvering around rings to perfect your hoard are over.

Each Diablo 4 class has a skill tree

Rewritten As you progress in Diablo 4, you will gain ability points which can be utilized to unlock various active and passive abilities for your character’s class through the skill tree. The skill tree is organized by different categories, and initially, your points will be invested in primary skills – these are attacks performed with your left mouse button that do not consume any mana or energy. As you invest more points in the tree, you will unlock Core skills, which are essential resource-consuming abilities, followed by defensive skills, and so forth.

Once you unlock an ability with just one point, a world of possibilities opens up to enhance it and select from a variety of paired modifiers. Let’s take the Barbarian’s Frenzy attack as an example. Once you upgrade it, you can opt for a stacking damage reduction buff that intensifies with each use or opt for an attack speed boost that extends to your other skills.

Blizzard’s latest aspiration involves players delving into the vast skill tree, unlocking a splendid 30-40% of its nodes as they journey through the endgame. Consequently, this promises a fascinating array of distinctive builds among players, even those who belong to the same class.

    Diablo 4 is open world

In the first quarterly update of 2022, lead environment artist Matt McDaid revealed that Diablo 4’s expansive open world is divided into five captivating regions. McDaid emphasized that each region presents its own unique set of perils and challenges. Explorers will have the freedom to chart their own course through this vast landscape, with countless hidden gems and pathways waiting to be discovered. The Art and Design teams have meticulously crafted a seamless and interconnected world, allowing players to traverse from one coast to another or ascend to the breathtaking glacial ridges. The Environment Art team’s primary objective is to ensure that every handcrafted location within this world is not only visually distinct but also deeply immersive, truly bringing the game to life.

In a stroke of kindness, the esteemed Blizzard environments team has crafted six captivating videos that offer a tantalizing glimpse into the awe-inspiring realms of Diablo 4. Feast your eyes on these masterpieces below:

  • Scosglen Coast.
  • Orbei Monastery.
  • Kyovashad.
  • Forgotten Places.
  • Wretched Caves.
  • Flooded Depths.

You get a horse in Diablo 4

Fortunately, traversing Diablo 4’s expansive realm on foot will not be necessary. As the main narrative unfolds, an enthralling mission will grant you the ability to summon a majestic steed, which can be ridden at your leisure while exploring the vast overworld.

The potential for personalizing your horse with a myriad of unlockable aesthetics is boundless in store. Despite the desolate and demon-infested realm that Diablo 4 is set to unfold in, there’s no reason why your towering 7-foot Barbarian cannot embrace their hidden passion for all things equestrian.

Diablo 4 will support controllers for PC

Blizzard’s inaugural quarterly update unveiled their innovative approach to crafting a user interface that caters to a diverse range of players. Angela Del Priore, the esteemed lead UI designer, shared intriguing insights on the UI/controller features awaiting players in the highly anticipated Diablo 4.

  • Seamlessly transition between using a mouse/keyboard and a controller without causing any disarray among users.
  • Opt for the placement of the action bar at the epicenter, be it the middle center or the captivating bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Experience the freedom to open UI screens individually while playing in the immersive couch co-op mode.
  • Explore the boundless possibilities of assigning an alternative action to your primary attack, liberating it from the conventional left mouse click.
  • There aren’t currently plans for a map overlay in Diablo 4

The beta testers of Diablo 4 were taken aback when they discovered the absence of a customary feature in ARPG games—a transparent map overlay. In this instance, navigation depended solely on the fragmented perspective offered by the in-game minimap. As an alternative, to check their whereabouts, players had to bring up the all-encompassing, non-translucent world map, which not only halted their progress but also left them vulnerable to potential dangers.

When asked if there were any future prospects of implementing it, Rod Fergusson, the general manager of Diablo, took to Twitter to clarify that there were no immediate plans to incorporate a translucent map overlay.

    The Paragon system returns

In a similar fashion to Diablo 3, Diablo 4 will introduce a unique Paragon system designed for the advancement of players beyond the main storyline.

After reaching level 50 in Diablo 4, players will unlock the Paragon Board, a unique system that utilizes digital tiles to enhance their powers and personalize their characters. The exciting journey commences at the center of the board and gradually expands to include normal, magic, rare, and legendary tiles, each offering diverse and impactful boosts. These earned tiles bestow various enhancements upon your character, ranging from basic ones to awe-inspiring abilities. Additionally, certain tiles serve as sockets for glyphs discovered during gameplay, granting additional advantages when inserted into the board. Moreover, these glyphs can be upgraded, amplifying their benefits even further.

Input: At some point, you’ll encounter the boundary of the Paragon Board, however, this is not where it all concludes. Instead, you’ll stumble upon a gate tile, an extraordinary type of tile that opens up pathways to other Paragon Boards. Each board boasts a distinctive arrangement and showcases an array of enchanting, scarce, and mythical tiles.

Blizzard expressed in their 2021 end of year update that as soon as your hero arrives at a gate tile, you will have the opportunity to select a fresh paragon board to connect with in that specific location. The ultimate goal is to create a customized array of rewards that will enhance your hero’s abilities and acknowledge your commitment to their growth, while ensuring that it remains enjoyable to fine-tune and modify throughout numerous playthroughs.

Brace yourself for an abundance of endlessly replayable endgame endeavors in Diablo 4! Beyond conquering challenging tiers that become accessible upon completing the main storyline, this highly anticipated game offers an array of thrilling activities to keep you immersed for countless hours. Delve into the realm of post-game content as showcased in the mesmerizing Diablo 4 endgame video.

  • The treacherous depths of Nightmare Dungeons can only be penetrated with a coveted Nightmare Sigil, stolen from vanquished foes across the vast realms. These haunting sigils unleash a cascade of new adversaries, modifiers, and quests, amplifying the challenge of the enigmatic dungeons. Naturally, the greater the peril, the more magnificent the spoils that await.
  • Input: Helltides, when playing at higher difficulty levels, will intensify the challenges posed by enemies across various regions of the world. Eliminating foes within Helltides has the potential to yield valuable shards, which in turn can be utilized to unlock exclusive chests known as Helltide Cache.
  • Echoes of the Deceased emerge as offerings from a colossal, cursed tree that scatter throughout the realm with unpredictable assignments, granting you the opportunity to accomplish them in exchange for valuable prizes.
  • In the PvP-infused realms known as Fields of Enmity, shards await your grasp, longing to be cleansed before transforming into valuable currency within the town’s walls. A subtle alert will be dispatched to fellow players as you embark on the sacred task of purifying these shards, compelling you to fend off any audacious thieves who dare to covet your precious bounty.
  • Diablo 4 will have a “pinnacle boss” for level 100 characters

Diablo 4 has a thrilling endgame challenge in store for players, in the form of an encounter with a formidable “pinnacle boss.” According to game director Joe Piepiora, this boss is specifically designed to provide an incredibly difficult test for those who have reached level 100. It serves as a way for players to showcase their mastery of character building and proudly proclaim, “I have crafted an unstoppable force. This is the culmination of my journey.”

Naturally, bountiful treasures await as well. As your relentless pursuit of superior equipment nears its zenith, the ultimate confrontation will not only offer majestic adornments but also a myriad of “unveiled rewards” to commemorate your remarkable feat.

Diablo 4 has a Battle Pass

Rewritten: Unveiled during a captivating livestream by developers in December 2022, Diablo 4 is set to embrace a novel approach to content delivery with its seasonal model. Each captivating Season, spanning approximately three months, will be accompanied by an exclusive Season Pass. This pass will bestow upon players a plethora of enticing rewards as they triumph in various in-game endeavors, akin to the traditional Battle Pass concept. Fear not, for a complimentary Season Pass will be available to all players, while those who opt for the paid version at a mere $10 will be treated to even more alluring and undoubtedly remarkable bounties. Worth mentioning, all rewards obtained through the Season Pass will be purely cosmetic, ensuring that those unwilling to invest an additional ten dollars every three months will not be left longing for any significant gameplay advantages.

In the realm of Diablo 4, an enchanting emporium awaits, where the allure of an in-game store beckons. However, amidst the thrilling Season Pass and forthcoming expansions, the treasures awaiting acquisition are solely limited to captivating cosmetics.

Diablo 4 will have cross-play multiplayer

Great news awaits those who have comrades immersed in the Xbox or Playstation gaming realms. During the captivating Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase in June 2022, an exhilarating revelation emerged from Blizzard’s lips: Diablo 4 crossplay shall embrace a seamless union across diverse platforms. Brace yourselves for the ultimate crossplay experience, for whether you wield an Xbox or your comrade possesses a PC, the harmonious journey of camaraderie awaits. Prepare to conquer together, united in the spirit of gaming, or indulge in the blissful realm of couch co-op.

How do the online features work?

The key highlights include instanced dungeons for both solo adventurers and party members. Additionally, bustling towns and safe havens in the overworld will be filled with numerous players, although there won’t be an option to completely disable them, even if you prefer to wander alone. Exciting world events will bring players together, and the ability to ride majestic mounts will provide a means to traverse vast distances. These mounts will primarily be horses, and for those interested, horse armor will be available for purchase. As for the challenges that lie ahead, dungeon difficulty can be adjusted upon entry, while above ground, the difficulty will adapt to match your level (although an unforgiving permadeath mode also exists).

Regrettably, for those who understandably oppose always-online games, the absence of offline play in Diablo 4 brings forth unfortunate tidings.

PvP will take place in Fields of Hatred

BlizzCon 2021 witnessed the grand revelation of Blizzard’s ingenious plan for Diablo 4’s captivating open world PvP experience. Preserve these tainted Shards until you reach a sacred altar, where their purification awaits, granting you the power to trade them for rare treasures from exclusive merchants. Beware, for if your life is abruptly extinguished while carrying impure Shards, they shall be relinquished, falling into the clutches of your assailant.

Hardcore characters will face permadeath in PvP

Rewritten Despite previous indications suggesting otherwise, Adam Fletcher, the development director of Diablo 4, recently took to Twitter to confirm that characters created in the game’s optional Hardcore mode will not be exempt from permanent death in PvP encounters. Just like in any other area, succumbing to death in the treacherous Fields of Hatred will result in a definitive end for your character, leaving you with no choice but to embark on a fresh journey with a new creation.

Fortunately, there is no need to worry about an inevitable danger being imposed upon the already intense Hardcore mode. The PvP zones known as the Fields of Hatred offer a choice, allowing you to opt out completely. Therefore, you only need to expose your character to the risk of battling against other players if you so desire. Otherwise, you can confidently engage in all the other activities that might unintentionally result in the demise of your Hardcore character.

Notably, Blizzard has officially affirmed the inclusion of DLSS 3 upscaling support right from the start in Diablo 4.

As the release date draws nearer, it becomes increasingly apparent that Blizzard has spared no expenses when it comes to the marketing of Diablo 4. They began by captivating fans with the opportunity to receive beta keys in exchange for getting Diablo tattoos, turning them into living billboards. Then, they surprised everyone with a Diablo 4-themed exhibition at Milan Fashion Week, which may not have been immediately recognizable as Diablo-related, leaving people to question the essence of marketing itself. And just when you thought things couldn’t get any more daring, Blizzard boldly embraced the unconventional by adorning the interior of a deconsecrated French chapel with mesmerizing Diablo 4 murals, relying on technicalities as a defense against divine retribution.

In a departure from sparking satanic hysteria, Blizzard’s latest publicity stunt merely challenges the sanctity of one’s physical vessel. Alternatively, one can obtain exclusive early entry to the Diablo 4 beta through the benevolence of Colonel Sanders, KFC’s esteemed Master of Dread.

What will the Microsoft purchase mean for Diablo 4?

In case you happened to overlook it, Microsoft recently made a stunning announcement about acquiring Activision Blizzard, paving the way for an imminent corporate cyberpunk future. Undoubtedly, this will rattle the status quo and have a profound impact on everything Blizzard has in store, particularly Diablo 4. Nevertheless, it remains too premature to predict the unfolding events as the release of the next Diablo installment is still quite distant. We can expect concrete updates on future plans only after the deal is sealed and the ink on the contract has dried.

Diablo 4 replaced its game director in late 2021

In the wake of the legal battle between Activision Blizzard and the state of California, the company made a significant change by parting ways with Louis Barriga, the game director of Diablo 4. Stepping into the role is Joe Shely, a seasoned senior game designer who has been an integral part of the Diablo 4 team since 2017. Prior to his new position, Shely contributed his expertise as a designer to various World of Warcraft expansions, eventually earning the esteemed title of senior game designer on Diablo 3.

In the October 2021 quarterly development blog for Diablo 4, Shely expressed that, much like the rest of us, their team has been deeply contemplating the recent events. They acknowledged the significant occurrences that have transpired since their last blog post and emphasized the ongoing commitment to upholding their core values. Amidst these crucial endeavors, the team also remains dedicated to the relentless progress of developing Diablo 4.
